7/9/2010 - TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- The Traverse City Beach Bums would like to welcome John Twork to the radio booth for three game series against the Normal CornBelters in Normal IL. Twork will be stepping in for Chad Cooper while Chad has returned home briefly to celebrate his sister's wedding.
John Twork is a recent graduate from Eastern Illinois University where he earned his bachelors degree in Journalism with a main focus on broadcasting. During his time at Eastern, Twork spent four years as a sports broadcaster for Hit-Mix 88.9 WEIU-FM and three years as their sports director, as well as worked with broadcast crews for EIU football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. He was also known as the play-by-play voice of EIU baseball from 2008-10 and women's basketball during the 2009-10 season, and served as the sideline reporter for EIU football.
Because of his efforts in college, Twork was recently awarded the second annual Jim Nantz Award as the top collegiate sports broadcaster in the U.S. This award, known as sport broadcasting’s equivalent to the Heisman Trophy, is presented by the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America. The STAA encourages collegiate sports broadcasters nationwide to strive to achieve their professional best and recognizes those students who have worked exceptionally hard to develop their sports broadcasting skills. What set Twork apart from the five other competitors in the program was his ability to, “put his listeners inside the stadium or arena by not only describing the action, but also the sights, sounds and emotions of the players, coaches and fans,” Jon Chelesnik, CEO of STAA.
John is now currently working in a graduate assistant position in the media relations office at Illinois State University.
