The Traverse City Beach Bums(0-1) pitching staff only allowed one earned run, but that was enough as they lost to the Schaumburg Boomers(1-0) by a final score of 3-0, in the opener of the 2017 season.

Both teams had opportunities to score early but neither could drive a run across the plate though four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Schaumburg's Sean Godfrey lead off by stroking a double into the left-center field gap. Two batters later, Will Soto drove him in with an RBI single to give them a 1-0 advantage.

Zach Weigel was hit by a pitch then Josh Gardiner reached on a fielding error to load the bases with two outs. David Harris stepped to the plate and drove a 1-1 pitch the other way, into right field. Both Soto and Weigel came in to score on the single, and the Boomers extended the lead to 3-0.

The Beach Bums were able to get on base to start innings but had trouble in driving them home as they left thirteen men on base throughout the contest. In the six of their nine offensive innings, a man was stranded in scoring position, and, in the ninth, they brought the tying run to the plate.

Pitching was the star of the game for both teams but Gunnar Kines earned the win, going five innings, allowing five hits, three walks, and striking out seven. Schaumburg combined to strike out seventeen batters on the evening, including a rare four strikeouts in the ninth inning by closer Jake Joyce.

Kramer Champlin suffered the loss for the Bums, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing six hits, three runs, only one of them earned, and he struck out two. Jacob LanningJake Ezell, and Devin Over took over for Champlin and kept Traverse City in the game allowing just two hits the rest of the way.
